The government has reversed course and declared that all high school students will study mathematics irrespective of the path they opt for. Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba revealed that mathematics will become mandatory across all three tracks within the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).
Education Minister Mr. Ogamba mentioned that although pure mathematics will continue to be part of the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) track, social sciences and arts & sports science paths will introduce specialized math classes aligned with each field.
“We aim to demonstrate once this proposal is presented that we’ve taken heed of public feedback; consultations held with the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development led to a consensus aimed at garnering broad backing… ensuring every pathway includes some level of maths – either core or applied – thus making sure everyone receives comprehensive mathematical training during secondary schooling.”
He emphasized his commitment towards equipping pupils with robust numeracy abilities despite their chosen academic direction. This policy adjustment departs significantly from previous guidelines stipulating obligatory math solely for those pursuing scientific careers under CBC structure up until now. Experts view this change positively since solid numerical literacy benefits critical thinking capabilities necessary beyond just technical fields.
Recently, discussions regarding mandating algebraic studies reignited nationwide conversations over how essential such knowledge remains amidst modern career landscapes alongside varying student requirements.
Ogamba noted these talks followed extensive grassroots meetings spanning forty-seven regions designed specifically around enhancing educational standards and inclusivity throughout Kenya.
“Such exchanges provide valuable insights enabling refinement of both syllabi content and teaching methodologies,” he added confidently before assuring attendees that input gathered here holds significant weight influencing upcoming decisions shaping curricula development processes ahead. “Implementing competency-focused learning demands meticulous attention due to its profound implications on societal progress aligning closely with long-term goals set forth by our administration.”
