New Delhi [India], April 28 (ANI): The esteemed violin virtuoso Lakshminarayana Subramaniam conveyed his deep appreciation to the Indian government for acknowledging his contributions and bestowing upon him the prestigious Padma Vibhushan award.
On Monday, President Droupadi Murmu conferred the Padma award upon Subramaniam during an esteemed ceremony conducted at Rashtrapathi Bhawan in the evening. His spouse, renowned singer Kavita Krishnamurthy, was also present at the event.
Following the ceremony, the distinguished artist spoke with ANI and shared his views on receiving the country’s second highest civil honor.
“I am incredibly joyful. Above all, I believe this honor is shared among all violinists since it’s the inaugural instance of a violinist receiving the Padma Vibhushan… Music has bestowed upon me every aspect of my life,” he stated.
L Subramaniam
has composed several musical compositions for ballet performances for well-known dance companies such as the San Jose Ballet Company, the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre, and the Mariinsky Ballet.
He likewise created scores for movies such as ‘Salaam Bombay’, ‘Mississippi Masala’, ‘Little Buddha’, and ‘Cotton Mary’.
During a previous discussion with ANI, he talked about obtaining his master’s degree in Western Classical Music.
He recounted, “Upon completing my medical studies, which spanned six and a half years, they advised me that if I wished to pursue a master’s degree in music, I should first obtain a diploma elsewhere over four years followed by earning a Bachelor’s in Music as well before returning for the master’s program. This would add an additional six years. However, I declined, stating that I was unwilling to spend another six years just to earn a bachelor’s degree in music. Instead, I submitted my recording and applied at several institutions.”
He continued, “There was one at the California Institute of Arts, founded by Walt Disney; it was an innovative new location. The other was in Ithaca, New York. When my father learned about the heavy snowfall and harsh winters in Ithaca, he insisted that you’d catch a chill. He advised going to California instead since it would be much healthier for you. Plus, you had some friends there too. That’s why I ended up moving to California.”
Discussing his journey towards obtaining a Master’s degree in Music in New York, he mentioned feeling homesick and eager to complete the program. “I managed to wrap up everything within just nine months. It made such a significant difference. They informed me that I needed an additional six years to earn my Bachelor’s degree. Almost finishing my Master’s in nine months with all the necessary credits required intense effort from my side since I lacked a bachelor’s degree in music, which meant I had to catch up on various courses. Often, you could find me buried in the library.” (ANI)
