Peupliers le long de l’Epte, sunset
is a painting of a series of 23 painted in 1891, a year after Claude Monet moved to Giverny. The artist was inspired by the poplar trees on the banks near his house.
This oil painting on canvas was first exhibited by the art dealer Paul Durand-Ruel, before he acquired it in 1892 for his personal collection. The work remained in the family collection until 1955, when it was exhibited at the

For three decades, prior to being lent out to various institutions across the United States and France.
A setting reminiscent of the edges of Giverny
The artwork, measuring more than three feet in height, portrays a line of poplar trees during twilight. It was created

From Claude Monet’s “studio boat.” Intrigued by the shifting light, the painter employed a range of delicate yet vivid hues.
The current piece stands out notably in this collection, using a subtly varied spectrum of gentle purples and pinks, along with blues and greens, to evoke the ethereal essence of fluctuating light at a precise transitional time between daylight and dusk.

An eagerly awaited global sale
Prior to being available for purchase in New York,
Peupliers au bord de l’Epte, crépuscule
was shown in Taipei on 19 and 20 April. This stopover in Taiwan holds special significance: “There’s always been a strong interest in classical Impressionism in Taipei. We have seen strong bidding from customers in this region for paintings by Monet and the Impressionists. And we hope that many Western clients will have the opportunity to view the piece in person,” explains Vanessa Fusco, Head of Impressionist and Modern art at Christie’s. Potential buyers will then have the opportunity to see the piece for themselves at the official sale, scheduled for 12 May at
