Developing intricate and pleasing beats using an array of African instruments, which inspire lively traditional dance routines, has essentially turned into a daily practice for participants in the Basa Dance Ensemble.
Since 2015, they have been active in Ghana and throughout the sub-region, and their determination has only grown stronger to ensure more individuals become acquainted with the array of treats they present during each show.
The group leader and drummer, Mike Frempong, known as Skido, has been a strong supporter of Ghanaian and African traditional music for more than twenty years.
He is delighted that the Basa Dance Ensemble is paving the way for constant exposure to the lively musical and dancing customs deeply valued in this region.
We hold no significance without sharing the distinctive performing arts passed down through generations,” states Skido. “Therefore, we generate beats using traditional instruments such as shakers, bells, flutes, xylophones, andgonjes, along with various drums including the Fontomfrom, Osramo, Atumpan, Atsimevu, and Dondo.
We were incredibly proud when we played for enthusiastic crowds at the Freedom Park on Lagos Island, Nigeria, in 2023. The following year, in 2024, we staged a performance at the Grand Bassam National Park in Côte d’Ivoire. While people from Ghana appreciated their rich musical heritage, experiencing live performances of their traditional music provided an entirely new dimension.
Skido noted that the crowds were deeply affected by the exciting performances of Kpanlogo, Adowa, Borborbor, Agbadza, Apatampa, Bamaya, and various other rhythms originating from different parts of Ghana. The ensemble presented both timeless classics and updated modern compositions.
“There are numerous enchanting rhythms and dances originating from Ghana that can captivate one at any moment. Each evokes distinct emotions. It’s intriguing how viewers who aren’t acquainted with certain elements become curious and inquire about them. We usually take the time to elucidate what catches their interest, which aids in enhancing their appreciation of us,” explains Skido.
The Basa Dance Ensemble anticipates performing across additional African nations with the aim of sharing the vibrant energy and dance traditions originating from Ghana, while also gaining insights from these locations to enhance their performances. They intend to embark on a tour of southern Africa soon.
For the members, Ghana represents just a modest part of Africa, and broadening their scope to include and embrace more of the continent would increase their acceptance in various regions.
