Morocco is set to participate in the 19th International Architecture Exhibition of the Venice Biennale, scheduled for May through November 2025. This prestigious event offers a platform to display the nation’s extensive architectural legacy and forward-thinking approach globally. To mark this significant moment, Morocco plans to exhibit “Materiae Palimpsest” at the Arsenale. The exhibition has been masterminded by Moroccan architects Khalil Morad El Ghilali and El Mehdi Belyasmine.

The project delves into the concept of earthen architecture, merging age-old craft techniques with modern technology. It aims to provide “a captivating journey through the world of soil-based building,” showcasing its resilience, adaptability, and inherent aesthetic appeal. Additionally, the exhibit will underscore the significance of using earth—a locally sourced and sustainable resource—as part of an eco-friendly approach that reduces waste and optimizes resource utilization across different levels.
The duo of architects explores ways to adapt these age-old techniques for contemporary use, highlighting the eco-friendly possibilities of using soil as construction material. This initiative honors customs intricately woven into the local culture, presenting an embodiment of Moroccan identity influenced by the nation’s landscape and history.
In addition, the objective is to foster a conversation between local craftsmen, keepers of traditional skills, and architects and engineers equipped with advanced technology. This exhibit will showcase how combining these different bodies of knowledge can lead to innovative architectural designs that uphold and adapt time-honored practices while taking advantage of contemporary technological advancements.
In the center of the pavilion, holograms will showcase two craftsmen performing traditional techniques. Additionally, pieces created by Moroccan artist Soumiya Jalal will be displayed. Morocco’s involvement stems from a partnership with the Ministry of Youth, Culture, and Communication along with the Ministry ofTerritorialDevelopment,UrbanPlanning,Housing,andCityPolicy.
