Fees Have Fallen … Tertiary Education Free From 2026

President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has unveiled major changes aimed at strengthening the government’s dedication to an inclusive education model where the state, parents, and students work together.

Central to these reforms is the ambitious goal of achieving a 100% government subsidy for tertiary education, commencing in the 2026 academic year.

Nandi-Ndaitwah announced this during the State of the Nation Address (Sona) in Windhoek on Thursday.

“The moral duty of our country is to ensure the education of the Namibian child,” stated the President.

The president announced that to achieve cost savings and maximize benefits for students, NSFAF will be reincorporated into the Ministry of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sports, Arts and Culture by October 2025.

She stated that under the Universal Access to Education Policy, the government of Namibia offers free primary and secondary schooling at all public institutions.

“Although tertiary education in Namibia already receives substantial support from the government, I am delighted to share that starting from the upcoming academic year beginning in 2026, all costs of tertiary education will be covered by the government,” she stated.

This means that no registration fees and no tuition fees are to be paid at all public universities and technical and vocational training centres.

Nandi-Ndaitwah stated that although this process will be gradual and implemented in phases, the contributions from families and students at present will cover lodging expenses along with other associated costs.

She announced, ‘We have listened to your pleas, “The Fees Have Fallen.”’

Nandi-Ndaitwah emphasized that this progress should send a clear message to the young people: It’s a valuable chance presented to them, one they ought to seize to showcase their abilities and significantly aid in advancing their nation’s growth while also assisting their families.
