Palestinian photojournalist in Cannes documentary killed in Gaza strike

Fatima Hassouna, a Palestinian artist and photojournalist set to be featured in a documentary premiering at Cannes next month, was killed in an Israeli air strike on Gaza, along with nine members of her family.

The 27-year-old had gained international recognition for her powerful images documenting the impact of Israeli military operations on civilians in Gaza.

She is the central figure in “Put Your Soul on Your Hand and Walk”, a documentary by French-Iranian filmmaker Sepideh Farsi, which was selected for the ACID section of the Cannes Film Festival just one day before her death.

The film is based on video exchanges between Farsi and Hassouna, which began as part of a broader project exploring life under siege in Gaza.

Farsi described Hassouna as “a light” and “so talented,” recalling how she had shared the Cannes news with her just hours before the bombing.

“She said, ‘I’ll come, but I have to go back to Gaza. I don’t want to leave Gaza,’” Farsi told Deadline.
