Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa has instructed cultural officials nationwide to promote the responsible utilization of technology, encompassing social media platforms, with the aim of safeguarding and respecting Tanzania’s traditions, standards, beliefs, and overall cultural heritage.
During his address at the 15th workshop for cultural and sports officials conducted in Dar es Salaam yesterday, Mr. Majaliwa cautioned that improper utilization of technology in our interconnected world could result in ethical decline, posing risks to societal well-being.
“Due to globalization and technological progress, society is experiencing a significant trend of ethical decline,” stated Mr. Majaliwa.
He attributed the threat to the digital revolution, which has enhanced borderless interactions among people, making it easier for local moral values to be influenced by foreign ones.
“The great threat here is the presence of pressures from foreign cultures that destroy our traditional culture by imposing unethical practices in the name of promoting human rights,” Mr Majaliwa said.
He emphasized to the Ministry of Information, Culture, Arts, and Sports during the meeting that they should make sure cultural officers are aware of the potential dangers posed by improper technological usage for communal welfare as well as the advantages of using it responsibly. He stressed that harnessing the digital transformation effectively could lead to significant economic gains.
Prime Minister Majaliwa instructed cultural officials to educate people about using technology responsibly, particularly focusing on young individuals. He urged them to promote Tanzanian cultural values but also spoke against misuse and the acceptance of foreign practices that could negatively affect Tanzania.
As a nation, we must refrain from adopting foreign cultural values that compromise our national ethical standards and overall civilization. We ought not to let ourselves become subordinate to foreign traditions that diminish our self-worth,” stated Mr. Majaliwa, encouraging individuals to steer clear of mindlessly replicating every aspect imported from overseas.
He mentioned that the administration plans to keep recruiting additional cultural attaches to expand the personnel dedicated to advocating for the country’s heritage.
Earlier, the Minister for Information, Culture, Arts and Sports, Professor Palamagamba Kabudi, noted that the culture, arts and sports sector is a driving force of national development, shaping the national identity.
He stated that the sectors of culture, arts, and sports, which are marked by the use of the Kiswahili language, play a crucial role in fostering development, promoting peace, enhancing prestige, encouraging unity and solidarity, as well as generating national revenue.
The gathering of cultural officers from every part of the nation was designed to outline a fresh strategy for advancing national ethical standards as well as the domains of culture, arts, and sports.
