Two Silpathorn Award artists will be performing with the Thai Youth Orchestra (TYO) during “Thai Youth and Legends”, at the Main Hall of Thailand Cultural Centre, Ratchadaphisek Road, on Sunday, at 2pm.
This historic performance features renowned pianist Nat Yontararak, who holds distinctions as both a Steinway and Silpathorn artist, playing Beethoven’s iconic Piano Concerto No. 5 in E-flat major. Conducting the TYO for the first time will be Vanich Potavanich, recently named as the orchestra’s leader—a distinguished Silpathorn Award recipient recognized for his innovative direction and profound understanding of music.
This partnership signals the start of an exhilarating new chapter for TYO, highlighting the ensemble’s emerging cohort of youthful artists. Additionally, they will present Wagner’s overture from “Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg” along with Sibelius’ Symphony No. 2 in D major.
Taking on the intricately woven “Die Meestersinger” Overture by Wagner and the emotionally stirring “Symphony No. 2” by Sibelius, this program highlights the orchestra’s remarkable aspirations and skill.
These acclaimed pieces, known for their technical complexity and emotional depth, are seldom assigned to young orchestras — which makes this performance a significant milestone for the ensemble’s latest cohort. Today’s matinee will serve as a powerful affirmation of commitment, guidance, and the fervor of youth.
Established in 1990, the TYO has played a pivotal role in advancing classical music in Thailand. This youth orchestra has garnered worldwide recognition, such as winning first place at the Summa Cum Laude International Youth Music Festival in Vienna, and it persists in fostering artists who achieve prominence both nationally and internationally.
