URGENT: China’s GDP grows 5.4% in 1st quarter amid tariff war with U.S.

China’s economy in the January-March period grew a real 5.4 percent from a year earlier, official data showed Wednesday, with the pace of expansion unchanged from the previous quarter amid a tariff war with the United States.

The increase in inflation-adjusted gross domestic product of the world’s second-largest economy was the same as 5.4 percent in the previous three months. Despite trade tensions with Washington, Beijing has set an ambitious growth target of around 5 percent for 2025 and implemented stimulus measures.
