Western Australians
living on the north-west coast are being warned to prepare for a tropical cyclone which is set to strengthen in the next 48 hours.

Tropical Cyclone Errol formed about 475km north-north-west of Broome at about 8pm (10pm AEDT) on Tuesday.

The Bureau of Meteorology forecasts the category one storm is likely to intensify to a category three as it travels further west before making a U-turn.

‘Tropical Cyclone Errol is moving west over open waters well off the northwest Kimberley coast,’ BoM said.

‘It is expected to continue moving west and intensify during Wednesday.

‘From Thursday Errol is expected to turn southeast towards the coast and peak in intensity as a severe tropical cyclone.’

The cyclone’s outer winds are set to impact a 400km stretch of coast from just north of Broome to north of Kuri Bay by Friday.

While it’s too early to predict whether the tropical cyclone will make landfall, BoM explained Errol should weaken as it approached the West Kimberley coast on Friday.

It comes as Aussies living in Australia’s capital cities will enjoy warm and sunny conditions over the Easter long weekend.

‘The Easter long weekend should start off on pretty good footing,’  BoM meteorologist Angus Hines told the Guardian.

‘We’ll have some fairly warm weather with temperatures several degrees above average to begin the long weekend.’

Mr Hines explained temperatures will remain warm through to Monday for Sydney, a cold front is expected to bring cooler weather to the country’s southern states.

He added the cold front, which is forecast to move through on Saturday, is set to bring a ‘big shift in temperature’ for Melbourne, Adelaide and Hobart.

‘We certainly could see some moderate rainfall totals across south-eastern Australia, particularly during Easter Sunday and Monday,’ Mr Hines said.

Meanwhile, residents in Brisbane, Perth and Darwin can expect balmy and sunny conditions as they enjoy the long weekend.
